Faculty, Other Academic Appointees and Dependent Children Tuition
The University offers a variety of tuition benefits for dependent children of Faculty and Other Academic Appointees. The summaries below provide key features of each of the tuition benefit offerings. A thorough description of each tuition benefit plan is available in the Educational Assistance Plan Summary of Benefits.
The following guidelines are applicable to the benefits described below.
- The benefit is available to full-time benefits eligible faculty/academic employees. For a list of University positions eligible for this benefit see pages 6 through 9 of the Educational Assistance Plan Summary of Benefits.
- There is no waiting period for the tuition benefit to begin.
- Applications must be submitted each semester/quarter.
- Applications should be sent to the Benefits Office by Fax 773-834-0996 or by e-mail benefits@uchicago.edu. It may take up to three weeks to process your tuition request.
- The benefit covers tuition only.
Tuition Benefits for the Dependent Children of Faculty and Other Academic Personnel
Faculty Children’s Scholarship Plan
- The University pays undergraduate tuition for dependent children of eligible employees at any accredited college or university in the United States OR any academically recognized foreign college or university that offers and undergraduate program leading to a bachelor’s degree.
- The maximum benefit is 8 semesters or 12 quarters. Summer school courses will count as a full semester or quarter if you submit an application to Benefits for the summer course.
- No benefit is available for certification programs in a specialized trade or for industrial schools, such as schools for aviation, cooking, auto repair, computers programming, etc.
- The maximum benefit awarded to your child cannot exceed the undergraduate tuition in effect at the University of Chicago at the time the tuition is due and payable.
- The benefit does not cover application fees, room and board charges, laboratory fees, activity fees other special fees charged for particular courses or programs and any other incidental fees. You must complete and submit an application at the beginning of each applicable quarter. Please select the appropriate application:
- Reimbursement checks are made payable to the faculty member and sent to their home address if their dependent attends school outside the University of Chicago. If your dependent attends the University of Chicago an adjustment will appear on your tuition bill.
Tuition Coverage for Highly Compensated Employees
- For academic personnel hired before July 1, 2004 the benefit is up to 85% of the University of Chicago tuition rate. The benefit is tax -free.
- For academic personnel hired after July 1, 2004 the benefit is up to 75% of the University of Chicago tuition rate. This benefit is taxable during the first four years of continuous employment.
Tuition Coverage for Non-highly Compensated Employees
- For academic personnel hired before July 1, 2004 -the benefit is up to 100% of the University of Chicago tuition rate. The benefit is tax-free.
- For academic personnel hired after July 1, 2004 the benefit is up to 75% of the University of Chicago tuition rate. The benefit is tax-free.
University Laboratory School Benefit
- The University pays 50% of the tuition at the University of Chicago Laboratory School for the Dependent Child of employees in eligible positions.
- Your dependent child must be enrolled in the nursery, kindergarten, lower, middle or high school at the University’s Laboratory Schools.
- A copy of your child's birth certificate must be submitted with the application. It is not necessary to submit an application more than once unless there has been a change in status.
